Perhaps you are already aware of the substantial antioxidant and
free radical scavenging properties of grape seed extract. Or perhaps
you are not, since our Grape Seed Extract only ranked number 28 in
sales last year. You may want to take another look though at this
unassuming little botanical.
Grape seed extract is known for being an
all-star cardiovascular and eye health protectant and also excels at
reducing edema from swelling and inflammation. Grape seed extract
even shows promise at
reducing the risk of some types of cancer.
If all that weren’t enough to ask of this vineyard extract,
encouraging new research shows Grape seed extract may also be a
great front line defender for prevention and treatment of
Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder
affecting nearly five million Americans. The disease causes
progressive deterioration in cognition and memory via destruction of
brain cells. As more and more families are learning in tragic
first-hand ways, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in
the United States. And there is no cure.
However, researchers at the
Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City found that
polyphenols obtained from red grape seeds demonstrated an ability to
reduce Alzheimers-type neuropathology and cognitive deterioration in
an Alzheimer’s mouse model.
Polyphenols are the most plentiful of plant phenolic compounds.
In addition to their countless health benefits, they also furnish
much of the flavor, color, and taste of fruits and vegetables.
Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti, senior author of the Mount Sinai
study said:
“… grape seed extract significantly reduced Alzheimer’s
disease-type cognitive deterioration in the Alzheimer’s disease
mice through mechanisms that prevent the formation of a more
complex form of a molecule known as an amyloid in the brain. The
implications of these studies, however, are not limited to
patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.”
Dr. Pasinetti goes on to explain that these nasty amyloids exist
in most everyone’s brain and whenever they combine into a more
complicated structure they affect brain function much as Alzheimer’s
itself does. A good way to look at amyloids is to view them via
their close biophysical cousins, spider webs.
Grape seed extract works to inhibit the formation of these more
complex amyloid structures and appears to help prevent loss of
memory in folks showing no signs of Alzheimer’s! This is almost
unbelievable news, but the best news to come out of this research is
grape seed extract will soon be tested in human clinical settings to
treat and prevent Alzheimer’s.
Cindy’s and Stephen’s grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s for
years and said plaintively before her disease had progressed too
far, “I always knew I would get old but I never thought I would
watch myself lose my mind.”
If you fear the curse of Alzheimer’s, the idea that you may
slowly lose your ability to remember anyone or anything in your
life, here’s a link to our
