In this issue:
Meow,
It is hard to believe that
Teri
will be a full half-century old this month. Condolences are unnecessary, as Teri
says that it was “forty” that messed her up momentarily.
In honor of our goddess of member services, here’s some pop trivia from 1955,
when Teri was born:
- Congress authorized all US currency and coins to say "In God We Trust"
- The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees
- Disneyland opened on July 17th
- The Guinness Book of World Records was first published on August
27th
- Ford Thunderbirds came to showrooms at just under $3,000 without options
- Narinder Kapany developed fiber optics (oh never mind)
Anyway, Teri’s keeping good company – she shares a fiftieth birthday in 2005
with Bill Gates, Kelsey Grammer, Kevin Costner, and Reba McEntire.
Of the four, she would unquestionably like to hang with Mr. Grammer (humor
trumps money, looks, and chords). Anyone with fewer than six degrees of
separation able to make an introduction?
Meanwhile, birthday congratulations are always welcome. The big day is August
16th. Best to get your love notes in early, as Teri is taking off for a big
getaway cruise -- to Alaska with Harley on Saturday (August 12th).
For birthday greetings, write to:
teri@ourhealthcoop.com or just reply to this newsletter and we’ll pass
along.
For Teri's Phone Pals
For our fair members who like to talk to Teri on a regular basis, she will be
out of the office from August 15th - 28th.
Yep, she heads to Las Vegas for the wedding – see below – before returning to
the Co-op. No worries though, as we’ll have phone coverage. Just leave a message
and we’ll be sure to have someone friendlier than moi get back to you. ^..^
Does Passage of CAFTA Threaten Access to Supplements?
You may be hearing that the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) is
threatening the laws that protect American rights to buy dietary supplements.
There’s a lot of noise about this topic, so we thought we should comment.
Here’s what our well-connected industry consultants had to say:
- Like CODEX, CAFTA does not automatically preempt or
invalidate laws in the U.S -- including DSHEA otherwise known as the
Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act.
- Only federal and state governments can change a federal or state law
(including DSHEA).
- CAFTA will not change how dietary supplements are currently regulated.
specific fact sheet on dietary supplements and CAFTA.
Meanwhile, new legislative bills are always being introduced that could
threaten ready access to your favorite supplements.
In fact, the Senate is currently considering limiting access to
DHEA, which is
technically considered an anabolic steroid.
The Council for
Responsible Nutrition (CRN) offers a position statement defending DHEA
against further regulation.
In their statement, CRN argues that DHEA does not work like other anabolic
steroids, which can have dangerous side effects that are not associated with
DHEA. Additionally, DHEA is known for helping restore healthy hormone levels
(testosterone and estrogen) in seniors.
For more information, see CRN’s full position statement:
DHEA Does Not
Belong on a “Controlled Substances” List

Also, on our home page, we
made it easy for you to send a letter to your representative (just in case you
lose the link above).

dietary supplements.
Voila! Press “send” and your letter is zapped off to your local
representatives!
It takes only a few minutes, so please keep reminding your legislators in
Washington D.C. not to tinker with DSHEA.
