How Strong is Your Immune System?
How strong is your immune system?
Unfortunately it can be hard to tell until it's too late and you're out of
commission.
Immune health doesn't have to be a
mystery, however; there are plenty of indirect ways to measure your body's
ability to keep well, including taking an inventory of possible stressors.
The following indirect immune
indicators can help you get a sense of how your immune system is coping (or
not) with incoming attacks:
Dental health - Irritated
gums, bad breath (if you're not sure about yours, just ask your sweetie),
and tooth decay don't just indicate a need for more mouthwash. Dental health
is a strong indicator of overall immune health and inflammation levels. If
your mouth is struggling, chances are your immune system is too.
Dehydration
- Water helps your body to flush toxins. Without water, cells struggle
to function properly and become more vulnerable to bad guys. If you're prone
to headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and dark colored urine, reassess your
water intake. Just be sure to limit drinking water during meals, as it
dilutes digestive juices and can lead to indigestion.
Sugar Cravings - If you're
craving sugar, you're probably already eating too much of it. The damage
isn't just to your waistline either. A study published in the American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating 100 g of sugar
significantly hampered the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria for
up to 5 hours.
Alcohol & Caffeine Use
- Even one glass of alcohol can depress your immune system. This means
if you like a glass of wine at the end of the day, or tend to be a social
drinker on the weekends, your immune system is working hard (as well as your
liver). Alcohol and caffeine also strip immune supporting B & C vitamins, so
be sure to tank up if you've been relying on coffee, tea, or evening
cocktails.
Sleep Deprivation
- If you've been skipping your zzz's, your immune system is already at a
disadvantage. University of Chicago researchers found that men who had slept
only 4 hours a night for 1 week produced half the amount of
flu-fighting antibodies in their blood (jump-started by a flu shot) compared
with those who slept 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 hours.
Excess Weight
- It's no secret extra pudge does nothing for good general health, and
immune health is no different. Excess weight can cause hormonal imbalances
and inflammation that impairs the immune system's ability to fight
infection. Just one more reason to jump on the treadmill!
I know, I know, takes all the fun out, doesn't it? Not to worry, you don't
have to give up all your wild and wicked ways, you just have to give your
immune system some extra help keeping up germ removal.
Supplement Safety & Pets - Quick Guide
Members always write to ask what we
carry for pets. Since we don't carry pet-specific products, here's a quick
supplement guide for how to share your favorite products with your furry
friends.
Pet-Friendly
Supplements
-
Antioxidants (including
vitamins C & E, beta carotene, quercetin, pycnogenol, anthocyanadins, and
CoQ-10) can all promote heart health and healthy cells. To calculate the
correct dose, divide 150 by your pet's weight. Use this number as the
percentage of the human dose.
-
Digestive enzymes - Particularly useful for combating allergies and
aiding nutrient absorption. Holistic vets recommend half the human dose.
-
Fish Oil - Useful to nourish skin, coat, and immune system function.
Also supports joint comfort, kidney function, and heart health. See
antioxidants for how to calculate a dose.
-
Glucosamine and Chondroitin - Supports joint comfort and healthy
bowel and bladder function. See antioxidants for how to calculate a
dose.
-
Probiotics - Just like humans, pets rely on a healthy bacteria
balance for digestion and immune function. Holistic vets recommend a full
human dose.
Pet-Harmful Supplements
-
Garlic - Unfortunately garlic can be harmful to red blood cells in
dogs and cats and should be avoided. Their breath is probably bad enough
already anyway. ^..^
-
Vitamin A - Most pet foods contain plenty of vitamin A, and too much
can be toxic.
-
Minerals - Manganese, zinc, iron and copper can likewise be toxic if
taken to excess. Leave it to the kibble to cover the minerals.
-
Alpha Lipoic Acid (for cats) - Unfortunately, ALA can be toxic for
cats, so keep this potent antioxidant to yourself.
As
with humans, be sure to confer with your pet's doc before starting a supplement
protocol.
Health in the News

Hypertension Linked to Dementia in Older Women.
Older women with hypertension are at increased risk
for developing brain lesions that cause dementia
later in life, according to data from the Women’s
Health Initiative Memory Study. The findings were
published in the December 2009 online issue of the
Journal of Clinical Hypertension.
-
Exercise Associated With Preventing, Improving Mild
Cognitive Impairment. Moderate physical
activity performed in midlife or later appears to be
associated with a reduced risk of mild cognitive
impairment, whereas a six-month high-intensity
aerobic exercise program may improve cognitive
function in individuals who already have the
condition, according to two reports in the January
issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives
journals.
That's all for now, fair members!

Still purringly yours,

Hi there, Teri!
This is your admirer from up here in Michigan writing just to commend you and
your organization for the near instantaneous service on my last order.
I ordered the night of 12/28 and my order arrived in Michigan today, 12/31.
Now that is mighty darn quick! Especially for the USPS.
I bought extra Sam's Formula for my son and his family. His kids are
sniffling all the time, so I figured they need a boost. I am certain they will
keep up with their own orders when this runs out.
They have seen me (the old buzzard) cruising through winter with nary a
sneeze, and my son is quite interested in Sam's Formula, as is my daughter-in
law.
My next order will be via telephone. I miss talking to you!
I wish you all continuing success, and all the best in 2010.
Rick V.
