L-Arginine - Supporting Blood Flow & More through Nitric Oxide Production
L-arginine is a staple favorite of the Co-op's integrative health friends
Dr. Hugo Rodier and
Mike Ciell,
RPH. Both recommend it regularly for cardiovascular health, immune
system function and more.
According to Dr. Rodier, "L-arginine and nitric oxide research led to the
Nobel Prize of Medicine in 1998 -- research which has since been
instrumental in exploring the link between inflammation and heart disease."
So, what's the big deal with this semi-essential amino acid? This kat thought
you should know.
Let’s start with the basics. L-arginine is a protein amino acid found in all
forms of life. While not among the
nine
essential amino acids for humans, l-arginine is still vital
to a well-functioning body.
L-arginine plays important roles in cell division, wound healing, ammonia
removal, and immune function. L-arginine is best known in the research world for
its cardiovascular support functions like reducing blood viscosity (thickness)
and reducing oxidation of lipids (fats).
Most notably, l-arginine acts as a precursor to nitric oxide -- an essential
gaseous molecule involved in everything from neuron transmission to blood
pressure regulation.
Fast fact: Paradoxically, nitric oxide is both toxic and
essential to the human body. When formed outside the body, nitric oxide is
considered a toxic pollutant and free radical. However, when produced inside the
body, nitric oxide exhibits a multitude of essential functions.
For cardiovascular health, nitric oxide plays a role in signaling the need to
circulate blood. And, blood vessels use nitric oxide to signal to surrounding
smooth muscles to relax, thus dilating arteries and increasing blood flow.
Nitric oxide plays an essential role in regulating activities of your brain,
lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach, gut, genitals and other organs! A busy little
molecule indeed!
L-Arginine -- Supporting the Immune System, Brain Function & More
Interestingly nitric oxide is toxic to bacteria and other pathogenic bad
boys, which means the immune system uses nitric oxide in fighting viral,
bacterial, and parasitic infections.
Nitric oxide is also thought to support the immune system through antioxidant
and wound-repair activity.
Nitric oxide also supports nervous system function by transmitting messages
between nerve cells and supporting the processes of learning, memory, sleeping,
and feeling pain.
