KAT’S INTERVIEW SERIES: DIANA DWAN POOLE – VIETNAM VET, R.N., & LONG-TIME MEMBER

Diana Dwan Poole has been a member since the beginning and sent this kat a note after we published our first interview with Mike Ciell. Here’s what Diana wrote:

“I have been an RN for over 30 years. I volunteered for two tours in Vietnam. I was just a kid, and I was put in charge of so many wounded young soldiers.”

When asked what her biggest lessons from serving in Vietnam were, Diana shared:

“When you work in the emergency room in a war zone, you really understand the fragile nature of the human body. One minute, a soldier is healthy, and the next, he has lost his legs. He’s just a boy with his entire life ahead of him -- as an amputee.”

“You also realize the huge strength of the human will. It literally makes the difference between getting well and giving up.”

“In Vietnam, I was in charge of Orthopedics and Casualty Receiving, where we provided triage for the wounded. There’s a lot of psychology involved in nursing. Sometimes you have no idea of the impact you have, but I got letters many years later from veterans telling me that I helped them have the will to live.”

“One veteran wrote: ‘I know you will not remember me because there were so many of us. You yelled at me and told me that if I didn’t get out of bed, I would never walk again! You scared the crap out of me and I’m glad, because I don’t even limp today!”

“I was young and even volunteered for a second tour. Many thought I was totally crazy. Yet, the new nurses coming in were scared to death. I took it upon myself to teach them how to take care of their wounded young brothers, and also to take care of themselves.”

When I asked Diana how she found the Co-op, she said that another Vietnam vet referred her. She liked all the back-up information on the products we offer. Diana went on to talk about natural medicines versus chemicals.

“I’m allergic to many things and prefer to go with natural approaches to health. My husband has Agent Orange (dioxin) in his body. Did you know that Agent Orange has a 174 year half life? That means that stuff is in his body for the rest of his life and can keep doing weird things to his health. My husband isn’t so interested in supplements, but he does take what I tell him to take! I put him on a variety of your products, including Heart Plus, CoQ-10, L-Carnitine, Alpha Lipoic Acid (he has Type II diabetes from the Agent Orange), etc.”

I asked how he was doing, and Diana told this story (this is verbatim, so no marketing hype here):

“My husband had a ‘silent’ heart attack, as if a heart attack could be silent! He had an angiogram, which showed 100% blockage of his main coronary artery. The doctors said, ‘You should be dead!’ My husband asked, ‘Do I need surgery?’ and the doctors said, ‘No, your body did it for you.’ Lo and behold, they found that Carl's heart had formed its OWN ‘bypass.’ He had grown two new vessels that bypassed the blockage!”

This kat wishes we could guarantee such good results for everyone! Congrats to Carl and Diana though, for sure. Diana went on with:

“These days, Carl’s blood pressure and cholesterol levels are good and his blood sugar is steady. The doctors don’t even know what half of your products that we use are, but I definitely attribute my husband’s health to the products you offer. And, Carl continues to amaze his cardiologist, a very good thing!”

Diana also shared that she uses natural approaches with her dog, which had a recurring ear infection that wasn’t being cured with antibiotics. She did some research on her own and found that using tea tree oil and lavender cleared up the infection right away.

Diana was so nice and she was at least canine-friendly, so I popped the infamous question: “What do you think of all the kat humor?” Diana’s response:

“I don’t even like cats, as I’m allergic to them!”

Sigh! I guess unanimous affection would be too much to ask. I continued with a question about humor and its value in healing.

“Humor is tremendously important! I remember a man who was brought to our hospital to die. He had cancer and the doctors gave him zero chance of recovering. So, his family rented Three Stooges movies and got him settled in comfortably. We could hear that man laughing all the way down the hall. And, you know what? His cancer disappeared.

“The doctors kept x-raying him, because they couldn’t believe the results. They finally sent him home with a clean bill of health! So, yes, humor is hugely important in healing!”

Diana shared lots more, about how she and her three siblings got their 79 year old mother on the Internet, how her husband has lost 80 pounds on the South Beach diet, how she swears by Arthro 3 and Fish Oil, how she grinds her own flaxseeds for her family (and her Arabian mare), etc. Diana ended with some touching comments about our little Co-op:

“Please don’t ever go out of business! I can’t imagine being without you and your products! I think you’re doing a terrific job. So many could not afford such good products otherwise! I think the Co-op is fantastic and have recommended you to many, even my doctor!”

Diana ended with: “Carl and I are delighted with your company, and shall remain faithful customers forever.”

O-k, I can live with that. Diana may not be a big feline fan, but being a big Co-op fan fuels my fat ego just fine. ^..^

Our next kat’s interview will be with Bill Henderson of www.getandstaywell.com (no room today). Stay tuned!

Also, if you have a story to tell, love the Co-op, and would like to be profiled, please let us know!

HEALTH IN THE NEWS

TERI VISITS THE EYE DOCTOR

Lots of whining yesterday morning from Teri, who visited her optometrist. She came back with her eyes dilated, unable to see, except when holding her pitiful magnifying glass to her computer screen.

Teri brought in a bottle of our Eye Protection formula and asked her doctor what she thought of the ingredients. Her doctor started with, “This is great stuff, you should be taking it!” followed by, “I know how touchy you are when we talk about aging, but you’re not getting any younger.”

I can just see Teri’s scrunched face. Teri doesn’t really like to admit that there is such a process as aging, so she’s been a late adopter when it comes to supplements. Teri rolled her eyes and said that she would add yet another supplement – Eye Formula -- to her kit at home.

In my next newsletter, I’ll update you on the much-talked- about research study that links antioxidants with increased cholesterol levels in mice. Let’s just say that there’s more context than the WebMD article provided. Sorry for the cliff- hanger, but it’s time to scat! ^..^

Still purringly yours,
