Greetings

Organic Dark Chocolate
Bars - Limited Supply!
I have learned one thing over the years.
Humans love chocolate (most of the ones I meet, at least).
Cindy, a
self-confessed chocolate nut, recently
discovered an ethical cooperative that was recently featured on the BBC’s
“Secret Treasures of the Caribbean" (you can see this amazing BBC story
of The Grenada Chocolate Company on
Youtube).
For our dark
chocolate fans, we are offering a limited quantity of
organic dark chocolate bars from the rain forests of Grenada.
If you don't already like dark chocolate, beware, this stuff is not as sweet as
milk chocolate (Cindy swears it's better for you).
With that caveat out there, here
are some fabulous reasons why Grenada Chocolate is so special and why it
won the Silver Award from The Academy of Chocolate in 2008:
-
Locally-grown cocoa beans enable the use of a local fermenting process,
which produces the finest and most complex chocolate flavors.
-
The
cocoa butter retains a richer chocolate flavor based on production using a
relatively low-pressure cocoa butter press (the things you learn in this
business!).
-
The
chocolate is hand-crafted in small batches that preserve freshness.
-
Organic cocoa beans, organic raw sugar, and organic vanilla beans (grown
biodynamically in Costa Rica) not only
eliminate pesticides but also contribute to sustainable farming efforts.
-
All
chocolate is guaranteed to be free of any nuts, fruit or dairy, even in
trace amounts.
And, even better,
the news is full of research studies proclaiming the benefits of
dark
chocolate to
lower stress and improve metabolism,
lower heart attack risk,
help with diarrhea, and
protect against DNA damage.
We’re
offering each bar of 71% organic dark chocolate for
just $1.99. Compare
with organic dark chocolate bars that typically sell for $3-$4.
Be sure that
you want dark chocolate as we will not be accepting any returns.
With that said,
order away, as supplies of our Grenada Chocolate bars are
limited!
Stevia: Guilt-Free Plain & Flavored SweetLeaf®
Liquid Stevia, Stevia Powder Now in Stock!
If dark
chocolate is not your thing or if you have a bit of a sweet tooth, stevia is a
handy all-natural, no-calorie, zero-glycemic index sweetener that many of our
members have long asked us to carry.
When this kat asked the humans about
their interest in carrying a stevia product, Cindy and Stephen learned they had
something in common in their cupboards: little brown bottles of flavored liquid
stevia from SweetLeaf.
Our favorite siblings had an amusing
little debate about flavors -- Stephen likes the Root Beer and Vanilla Creme
flavors best; Cindy is a big fan of the English Toffee flavor; and they agree
that the Chocolate flavor isn't worth the money (it takes too many drops and
doesn't pack enough chocolate flavor to impress any real chocolate fan).
As the discussion moved from flavors
(yawn) to pricing, this kat was aghast to learn that these little brown bottles
of flavored stevia typically retail for $14.99 (egad!). We decided we could do
better than that, and methinks a whole lot of you will be needing a little help
cutting calories after the holidays are over.
So, here's the scoop: we’re
offering a plain version plus five flavors at great, low prices: English
Toffee, Vanilla Cream, Root Beer, Lemon, Berry, and Plain. We're also
offering SweetLeaf® Sweetener Stevia packets for on-the-go.
If
you’re not familiar with
stevia,
it is a plant-derived sweetener with extracts
up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar without any of those empty calories
that no one really needs. You can cook with stevia and also add it to your
favorite hot cereals, cookie dough, batters, etc. Teri likes to put a few
drops in club soda or seltzer water and others like to flavor
their ice cubes.
Each 2 oz.
bottle of
SweetLeaf Liquid Stevia contains hundreds of servings and will cost you just
$8.95 (compare at $14.99 in stores).
Each 50-packet box of
SweetLeaf Sweetener will cost you just $4.99 (compare with $7.99 in
stores).
Nutrition, Beagle Brains & Cognition? A Case for Supplements!
Dementia research seems to have gone to the dogs - literally. Turns out a
number of cognition-related studies have featured aging Beagles as the
recipients of supplements! Who knew Beagles needed cognitive help (duh!)?
^..^
Anyway, interestingly enough, aging dog brains suffer from many of the same
degenerative conditions as aging human brains. Rusty old Beagles even
exhibit amyloid beta-peptide, the cause of oxidative changes to brain
proteins and the dreaded substance associated with Alzheimer’s in humans.
Now
for the good news!
A
2008 study showed
short-term memory improvements for Beagles given
phosphatidylserine,
ginkgo biloba,
vitamin E, and
vitamin B6. Beagle performance accuracy was
significantly improved in dogs taking supplements compared with control
dogs--and the effect was long lasting.
Another recent study evaluated Beagles who were fed
alpha-lipoic acid,
carnitine, and vitamins
C &
E and/or enriched with exercise, play, social
interaction, and new cognitive experiences. Results showed that
Beagles fed the four antioxidants and
who were environmentally enriched scored best on cognitive tests.
Antioxidants also inhibited the dreaded beta-amyloid formation (the
precursor of Alzheimer's) in those little Beagle brains.
I
think this is pretty interesting stuff, even if I can’t help taking jabs at
those floppy-eared howlers. ^..^
From Service Dog to SURFice Dog -Sweet
Must-See Story
This week Teri forwarded the inspiring video of a dog who chose surfing over
the life of a service dog. After being trained since puppyhood for a life of
service, Ricochet couldn't give up her love of chasing birds and thus failed
her final service dog certification. Her trainer so wanted Ricochet to be a
service dog.
Having invested so many hours, Ricochet’s trainer decided to get creative
and started training her bird-chasing dog to surf (good grief, dogs will do
anything for attention). And, humans love a spectacle, so Ricochet, the
surfing dog, became a fundraising star for kids in need.
It’s a sweet story:
