Oxidation & Inflammation -- Dr. Rodier Interview, Part 3
Dr. Rodier compares the normal metabolic processes that produce oxidation and inflammation in cells, to being similar to any engine that produces exhaust as part of its normal fuel burning operation. He goes on to describe what can happen without proper nutrition to balance these pro-oxidizing and inflammatory functions. Dr. Rodier makes the case, using his usual mental encyclopedia of journal citations, that the very root cause of disease is inflammation, and oxidation is a driving force in insulin resistance, cellular mutations, and pre-mature aging. This kat is willing to wager Dr. Rodier's explanation of your metabolism and cell function is easily one of the most simple and compelling you'll ever hear.
Continuing with the engine metaphor, Dr. Rodier goes on to discuss how you can give yourself a "metabolic tune-up" and prevent cells from TOIL-ing, thus curbing their susceptibility to mutation, disease, or early death. He ties TOIL to heart health, metabolic health, digestive health, and far more.
Methinks many of you will find his citation from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition particularly disturbing, "Chronic Intake of potato chips increases reactive oxygen radicals and increases C-Reactive Protein [an inflammation marker]."
Please say it isn't so, you say? Listen and find out!
A Kat's Perspective - Earth Day Vital to Your Health
Yesterday, April 22nd, marked Earth Day, an inspirational day celebrated in 175 countries around the world in honor of caring for this life-giving resource we call planet Earth. This year's theme was coined, "A Billion Acts of Green," meant to inspire a billion small (or large) acts of advocacy or environmental service.
This kat is calling particular attention to Earth Day this year because of Dr. Rodier's recent highlight of the devastating health effects of pollution. In particular his citation that 90% of diseases are environmentally provoked. He rattles off a slough of journal articles on the connection between pollution and metabolic syndrome, cancer, asthma, infertility, and many more. If you haven't yet listened to Part 2 of our TOIL series on Toxicity, don't miss it.
Back to the earth. Without a healthy planet to support antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, clean air, safe water, and nutrient-dense soils, maintaining good health becomes the uphill battle that many folks in more toxic regions are already fighting.
So, take a pause and consider participating in on-going Earth Day activities. Even simply taking the time to recycle, re-use containers, keep oxygen-giving plants, and curb chemical use can make, literally, a world of difference. Learn more about what you do for your planet and your health by visiting the Earth Day website.

Save 20% on (ALL!) Dr. Rodier's Latest Recommendations
In Dr. Rodier could easily recommend nutrients all day (and don't even get him started on fruits and vegetables!), as he gets very excited when it comes to providing cells what they need to do their jobs and keep you healthy. As he jokes about himself, he "doesn't get out much." ^..^
20% off any product Dr. Rodier recommends in this week's TOIL series. Here's a re-cap:
As a stand-alone, well-rounded product for supporting your body in combating oxidation, Dr. Rodier loves Sam's Advanced Antioxidant Plus D3 Formula. He also recommends our Multi Veggies in the same spirit of comprehensive, basic nutrition, especially if you're easily shy of the recommended 13 servings of fruits and vegetables each day (and, uh, this kat is guessing that's at least 75% of you!).
If you're aiming for the basics, Dr. Rodier considers these five single-ingredient products his "A Team" for addressing Oxidation and Inflammation in particular:
And, for those interested in heart health, Dr. Rodier pointed to L-Arginine and Heart Plus:
L-Arginine – having been the focus of Nobel Prize-winning research in 1998, L-Arginine is considered a terrific ally in maintaining healthy arterial lining and promoting circulation.
Heart Plus and new Heart Plus Veg Caps – both strong allies in supporting healthy artery linings, Linus Pauling’s formula has shown particularly helpful in discouraging cholesterol stock piles. As Dr. Rodier points out, cholesterol gets a bad rap for doing a life-saving deed. Cholesterol is rigged to patch up leaky arteries, which result from shriveled up, undernourished cells that eventually die off, leaving gaps in artery walls. Cholesterol seeks to help patch these gaps, but if the demand is too high, a poor patch job and dangerous plaque can result.
Lastly, Dr. Rodier suggests Grape Seed Extract and is a huge fan Probiotics16. He also touts herbs like Garlic, Ginger, and Panax Ginseng, stating that the "medicinal" power of herbs is simply that they are extremely concentrated versions of the nutrients found in whole foods.
