Final Segment in Dr. Rodier TOIL Series: The Mitochondria and Cellular Energy
This week we introduce the final segment of our four-part web-radio series with Dr. Hugo Rodier. The series has explored each vital component of Dr. Rodier's acronym "TOIL" - Toxicity, Oxidation, Inflammation, and Less-than-optimal mitochondrial function. Sound geeky? Quite the contrary, fair members, this series breaks health and disease down to startlingly simple levels.
According to Dr. Rodier's extensive research, the common denominator in the many prevalent modern diseases or discomforts of today is insulin resistance. When cell membranes are no longer healthy, or are "TOILing" you might say, cells become insulin resistant and unable to receive nutrients or dispel toxins properly -- thus increasing their vulnerability to malfunction, mutation, or premature death.
Over the last four weeks, Dr. Rodier has discussed each of the contributing factors to poor cellular health, as well as what you can do to minimize their effects. This week, Part 4 focuses on the mitochondria, which function to transform the food you eat into energy you need to live. Sadly, mitochondria are extremely sensitive to toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation, and when damaged can easily compromise energy levels and overall health.
Dr. Rodier offers tips for specifically supporting your mitochondrial function with good foods, Coenzyme Q10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid (which all directly protect and assist mitochodrial function). He further offers solid science in support of less-tangible nutrients like love, and their proven value to cellular health. Interesting stuff, this kat promises you.

A Kat's Perspective - The Dangers of the Sedentary Lifestyle
Usually this kat is of the mind that humans could learn oodles of good lessons by mimicking their feline friends, but activity is an area in which felines are not known for their zeal. And, recently I came across a very troubling article on the deadly consequences of sedentary lifestyles (yep, even you fitness buffs)!
Turns out the amount of time you spend on your back-side and the time you spend working out are completely separate factors for heart-disease risk. New evidence suggests the more hours a day you sit, the greater your likelihood of dying an earlier death regardless of how much you exercise or how lean you are. Not fair? Probably, but worth your attention.
Startlingly, a 2010 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that when healthy men limited their number of footsteps by 85 percent for 2 weeks, they experienced a 17 percent decrease in insulin sensitivity, significantly raising their diabetes risk.
Additionally, a 2009 study showed those who sat for almost the entire day were 54 percent more likely to end up suffering heart episodes than those who sat for almost none of the time. Surprisingly, it didn't matter how much the "sitters" weighed or how often they exercised.
"Humans sit too much, so you have to treat the problem specifically," says one researcher, Hamilton. "The cure for too much sitting isn't more exercise. Exercise is good, of course, but the average person could never do enough to counteract the effect of hours and hours of chair time."
Check out the article, fair members, and consider the tips it provides. One way you can learn from your feline friends is to take regular stretch breaks, which not only promote movement and activity, but also prevent muscles from "setting" in unhealthy positions.
