EPA Warns of Sun Damage to Eyes!
With the summer sun blazing in much of the world, it's a good idea to remember that while our friendly star provides warmth and vital energy for our cozy planet, it can also generate profound damage to our skin and our eyes.
It was the latter, less obvious of these two vulnerable areas, that prompted the EPA to focus a warning regarding sun damage and vision:
"UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or artificial UV rays, can damage the eye, affecting surface tissues and internal structures, such as the cornea and lens.
"Long-term exposure to UV radiation can lead to cataracts, skin cancer around the eyelids, and other eye disorders.
"In the short term, excessive exposure to UV radiation from daily activities, including reflections off of snow, pavement, and other surfaces, can burn the front surface of the eye, similar to a sunburn on the skin."
For felines, our eyes are essential to our survival (and our ability to bring our people unexpected little prizes we've captured in the backyard). While humans can survive much more readily without their vision, losing it or having it severely compromised substantially impacts the quality of one's life.
So, fair members, remember to protect your baby blues (browns, hazels, or greens) from the sun and other UV sources.
