National Headache Awareness Week - Ways to Reduce the Pain and Frequency

Ah, the headache. Second only to the common cold as North Americans' biggest health complaint, regular headaches affect an estimated 100 million people.

It's National Headache Awareness Week (not exactly a celebration, mind you), and this kat thought we should discuss the dreaded skull-pounders (and what you can do to minimize your chances of getting them).

It's amazing really, the number of different headaches you can suffer. Cluster headaches, tension headaches, caffeine headaches, hormone headaches, rebound headaches...the list goes on, and there's always the dreaded migraines. Headaches range in their causes and severity, but there are some common denominator actions you can take to curb your susceptibility.

Here's a list of suggestions adapted from works of MPH & RD, Elaine Magee:
  • Keep a headache and diet diary, and don't forget to record use of artificial sweeteners (handy for unearthing particularly triggering foods).
  • Avoid skipping meals (really, why would you want to anyway?).
  • Limit caffeine to a moderate and consistent amount daily or eliminate it completely.
  • Avoid eating a high-fat diet (as if you needed another reason).
  • Avoid certain additives like MSG and nitrates/nitrites.
  • Curb your intake of alcohol and caffeine, and stay hydrated as much as possible.
Additionally, there are a number of vitamins and minerals to support your body in keeping headaches at bay. In our Super Saver Section of the Newsletter, we're featuring three from the Co-op (at a handsome discount) to support your well being.

And, if you'd like to sink your teeth in to even more headache wisdom and suggestions, you may want to check out a very comprehensive article on chronic headaches.

Teri EdgellTeri Blogs on Wellness Meditation and Closet Discipline. Seems like everyone could take a few minutes out of each day to focus on wellness.  Teri makes that process easy as she shares a guided meditation to activate the immune system. Then, venturing into a whole other realm, Teri explores the virtues of closet discipline and tells a tale on herself about the need for a keen memory, if you're going to leave beer in the freezer. So many choices from Teri this week. Oh, go ahead, take a moment and read them all. Her wise, but lighthearted messages always bring a smile to the face.

Kat's Perspective: The Power of Words

Humans have a unique ability when it comes to language -- the use of words.  While felines, birds, and other creatures great and small make a symphony of sounds, words allow for such a remarkable nuance of meanings. Watching humans run to and fro' in today's whacky, busy world... this kat is wondering if they are taking full advantage of the marvelous gift of words they've been given.

A video that's generating a lot of attention on YouTube contemplates this very point. Take a look and then ask yourself if you're using your words to create the outcomes you truly want in life. (Meanwhile, this kat will be working on trying to say "More tuna now, please!") ^..^

P.S. Know of other videos you think we'd enjoy sharing? This kat would love to hear your ideas?

That's all for now fair members.

Still purringly yours,

Guido

    Save 20% on B-Trio, Potassium, & Magnesium

In support of National Headache Awareness Week, we're offering three key supplements of interest in this regard:

Potassium Gluconate - As an essential electrolyte, potassium supports your nervous system, muscle functions, fluid balance, and heart, kidney, and adrenal functions. Inadequate potassium levels have been strongly linked with headaches (must be those deprived nerves and muscles contracting), and in fact, headaches are considered an official symptom of potassium deficiency. Additionally, potassium helps regulate the body's acid-base balance, build muscle, synthesize protein and maintain healthy electrical activity in the heart. Potassium also plays a role in nerve responses to stimulation and in muscle contraction.

Magnesium Citrate - Handy for soothing tension and migraine headaches in particular, magnesium has shown to help with headaches overall by acting as a natural relaxer. Interestingly, migraine and tension sufferers consistently present with low magnesium levels, and researchers theorize that resulting headaches may have to do with magnesium's role in blood vessel tone maintenance (i.e. getting proper, and not excessive, nutrients to your head). Magnesium also supports over 300 vital chemical reactions in the body, including those related to energy, heart health, and muscle function.

B-Trio Chewable - Loaded with Vitamin B6, B12, and Folic Acid, our B-Trio Chewable offers comfort on a number of fronts. Interestingly, B6 supports normal nerve cell function by contributing to the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is directly connected with your ability to relax, sleep, and concentrate. Low serotonin levels have linked with migraines and other neurological pains, leading researchers to investigate how B6 can help. B12 also supports healthy nervous system function, and both Bs work together with Folic Acid to keep homocysteine levels in check (homocysteine, in addition to being bad news for heart health, has also been linked with migraines and other headaches).
